About Us:
The Top Our Climbing Cooperative (TOCC, https://topoutclimbingcoop.com) is a member-owned, non-profit co-operative climbing gym in Powell River located at 101-5831 Ash Ave, Powell River, BC V8A 4R5. It was originally born in part thanks to a Community Forest Grant in 2016, and has had its doors open since December of 2018. Since its opening, it has aimed to be a safe and welcoming space for individuals of all ages to have fun, connect with one another and stay physically active year-round. The facility has over 100 members, bouldering and top roping, a training area as well as a kilter board. We aim to provide a welcoming and inclusive space for climbers of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities.
Job Overview:
We are seeking a passionate, community-focused Co-op Manager to lead our operations, support our mission, and grow our membership. The ideal candidate will have experience in climbing gym management, non-profit operations, and community outreach. They will be responsible for overseeing day-to-day activities, managing staff and volunteers, and driving the gym’s growth and impact.
Key Responsibilities:
● Operations Management: Oversee daily operations, including scheduling, equipment maintenance, and facility cleanliness and management.
● Staff and Volunteer Coordination: Recruit, train, and manage a small team of staff and volunteers, ensuring a positive work environment.
● Membership Engagement: Develop and implement strategies to grow and retain membership, including member events, workshops, community-building activities, and management of social media content.
● Financial Oversight: In conjunction with the Board of directors, manage budgets, track expenses, and ensure financial health through fundraising, grant writing, and other revenue-generating activities.
● Safety and Compliance: Ensure all safety protocols are followed by staff and members, conduct appropriate safety inspections of facility and equipment.
● Community Outreach: Build partnerships with local organizations, schools, and businesses to increase gym visibility and support the mission. This includes the management of the gym’s social media accounts.
● Board Collaboration: Work closely with the board of directors to align operations with the organization’s mission and long-term goals.
● Programming: Implement teams, groups, birthday and corporate events.
Preferred experience and qualifications:
● Experience in climbing gym management, non-profit operations, or a related recreation or facilities management field.
● Strong leadership skills with experience in staff and volunteer management.
● Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with a passion for community building.
● Understanding of financial management, including budgeting and fundraising.
● Commitment to the values of equity, diversity, and inclusion.
● Ability to provide exceptional customer service.
● Experience with cooperative or member-owned organizations.
● Certification in climbing instruction or gym management (e.g., ACMG Certification).
● Familiarity with grant writing and non-profit funding sources.
● Experience in marketing, social media, or public relations.
● Climbing experience and knowledge of climbing equipment and safety standards.
● Route setting – additional hours will be available for candidates adept in route setting.
